Compost Tea: A Little Garden Brew for Living Soil

Compost Tea: A Little Garden Brew for Living Soil

Compost tea is a simple liquid made by steeping finished compost in water. Gardeners use it to carry some of the compost’s soluble nutrients and microorganisms into the soil around their plants.

Think of it as a supplement—not a replacement for healthy soil, finished compost or proper fertilizer.

A Simple Compost Tea Recipe

You will need:

  • 1 cup of fully finished, earthy-smelling compost
  • 1 gallon of chlorine-free water
  • A clean bucket
  • A porous cloth or mesh bag
  • A stick for stirring

Place the compost inside the cloth or mesh bag and submerge it in the water. Let it steep for approximately 12–24 hours, stirring it several times to introduce oxygen.

Remove the compost bag and return its contents to your compost pile or garden bed. Use the finished tea immediately as a soil drench around the base of your plants.

A Few Important Tips

Only use mature compost that smells clean and earthy. Compost that smells rotten, sour or strongly like ammonia is not ready.

Apply compost tea to the soil rather than spraying it onto vegetables, herbs or fruit that will soon be eaten. Avoid teas made from fresh manure, and clean your bucket and tools after every batch.

Compost tea should not be bottled or stored. Once it sits too long—especially without oxygen—the mixture can develop undesirable bacteria and unpleasant odors.

Keep It Simple

There are elaborate compost-tea recipes involving pumps, additives and brewing systems, but beginners do not need to start there. Good compost, clean water and responsible soil application are enough for a gentle introduction.

The real strength of a garden still comes from building healthy soil over time: adding organic matter, protecting soil life, watering thoughtfully and paying attention to what your plants are telling you.

Good soil is not made overnight. Like everything worth growing, it develops layer by layer.

Keep Growing Low N Slow.
